Memoir
Srijan Parikh
“D`andre, D`andre, go and alert my top village soldier to report immediately in my chamber.” I exclaimed. I have one of my most top soldiers of the village and his name is Thomas Johns. “Yes governor, how may I help you.” he said politely. I informed Thomas that the war between us and the Spain will be starting. We really need the solid weapons that are made out of iron, so we can fight the Spain soldiers and win the battle. “I will go immediately out to the village and get the top most famous blacksmith that could help us make our weapons. Thomas left with his one stern great horse. His horse runs faster than any other thing in the world. Thomas galloped away from the field.
While my fellow soldier went to look for a blacksmith, I thought that I should make smart plans to attack the Spaniards. “D`andre, give me the map and close my chamber door. Make sure that there is no noise. I will now start my important plans in attacking the Spaniards. I spent two hours making plans. I explained my other soldiers that we will capture all their ships that will be headings towards our land. Then I explained that before the war starts we must visit America. We might be able to find different valuable resources in America that might help us in fighting the Spaniards.
I was about to continue to tell them my other plans when my slave came in. “Thomas has come back with one of the greatest blacksmith in town.” D`andre said. Thomas came in my chamber and said that the name of the blacksmith he has brought with him is Gary Wilkins. He is known as the best iron maker. Many people praise him for his work and I have seen also the different types of iron tools he has made. He said that he would love to make iron swords for me and he will do his best to make them.
I saw Gary working really hard in making the swords, so I congratulated Thomas for getting me Gary. I also then congratulated Gary with thousands of dollars for taking a lot of time out from his day and helping me make the swords. I told Thomas what my plans were and he agreed with them. I also told him that they had 10 days before the war and they had to make thousands of swords. I told Thomas that I wanted him to stay there while I was gone, so that he could come up with plans to get the swords made. Thomas said that he will do his best to solve this problem.
I was getting ready that morning to leave for America. Gary came in my room. “I heard that thousands of swords need to be made and you have less than ten days to do that. I will share my process of making the swords with all of your soldiers. Then the soldiers could help me in making the swords. “Okay, I will allow that.” I left on my big ship. We went through America and found resources such as fire matches and iron. We came back that day when we were away from 2 days of war. I came and saw everyone working really hard in making the swords. On the day of war we captured many ships and also killed many soldiers. On the first day of war the bad news was that my best top soldier, Thomas died. I was buried under tears when I heard that news. After 5 days of war the good news was that we won the battle against Spain. It was good that we had good swords made by the blacksmith or else I would not have won the war without those really good swords by the blacksmith. I respected Thomas a lot that day.
Memoir Dorian
This was a couple days away from a fatal day. I work as a slave for the governor. Luckily my parents raised me to like gardening and it didn’t bother me too much except for the yelling. I was a good slave never wanted to get into trouble after I found out what happened to Dante Denzel, he was a slave, pretty old, and we used to be buddies before he tried to escape and was beaten so bad he could barely walk. I am pretty young and seeing an old man like that get beaten like that was pretty extreme. The governor wasn’t the worst I’ve seen worst slave owners when the governor sent me out to do things. The governor knew I would never run away because I was too scared and he was right.
It was pretty cool what happened on the days before the war. “D’andre, D’andre, Go and alert my top village soldier to report immediately in my chamber.” The Governor exclaimed. I quickly ran and fetched his favorite and best soldier Thomas. I heard the governor (Peter) say something about getting the extraordinary blacksmith, Gary Wilkins, to make weapons for us. Once I heard that I knew that if we got the weapons we would win the war even without Thomas. After that I had seen Thomas leave the building and got on his stallion, which was the fastest horse in the village.
Soon Thomas came back with Gary Wilkins I was amazed when I had seen him actually come. Gary made the best weapons ever and he basically is the decider of the war. If he makes the weapons we win, if he doesn’t we might not win. I went into the building to inform the governor.
“Thomas has come back with one of the greatest blacksmith in town.” I said. Peter nodded and I left the building. I went to the fields and I watched Gary go into the building and all I could think about was if he would make the weapons for us or not. I heard them laughing and I figured that they had made the deal. I was so happy and I wasn’t scared at all about the war. I knew some people would die, but not many with the weapons we had.
The next day was 2 days before war. I had seen all the soldiers go with Gary. Since Peter was leaving I went with Gary. He had taken us to his shop. He had taught all the soldiers how to make perfect swords and made me hand out the materials. It was pretty cool to see how the swords were made and to see soldiers working so hard to make the swords. Of course, Thomas made the best swords out of all the soldiers and he also made the most swords. Soon the shop was filled with lots of swords and we had to put some of them outside. They took two soldiers and put them outside to stand guard. We wanted to make sure that no one would steal the weapons. Leaving them alone outside would be such a big risk. After a lot of sweat and hard work we had enough swords for a whole village to get them. They made extras just in case the swords broke which wasn’t very likely to happen
It was the first day of war. Our soldiers had destroyed many submerged ships and killed lots of people. The governor sent me out to try to find him some enemy weapons, so he can examine them and see if they were better. So I was going to look until I came between crossfire. It was our best soldier vs another soldier from the enemy side. I quickly realized what was about to happen and hid behind a nearby bush. I had seen a gun hidden behind the bush and picked it up. Before I looked up I had heard a gun fire. I thought it was it Thomas killing the other soldier, but sadly that was not what happened. I realized that there was red, dripping, blood coming right out of Thomas’s chest. Thomas lied on the ground without a single movement. After a while I came to the conclusion that Thomas was dead. I came out the bush and quickly shot the other soldier, he too died. I took his weapon and quickly rushed back to the governor. I gave him the weapons and said nothing about Thomas death.
I began to leave when I heard the words “Thank you”. It’s not too often that a slave is thanked by his owner. I walked out with a smirk, but still a sad face because Thomas had died. While I was gardening I kept thinking about how Thomas died and how we might lose the war without him. Thomas was the one who the governor favored and I got to meet him on a few occasion, he was pretty nice guy. I kept thinking about it until I head tears coming from the governor’s home. I walked up close to the door and heard him weeping about how the war was nothing without Thomas. I suddenly felt bad again and went back to gardening. The next couple of days the war was just agony. The Governor was meaner than ever. Once I dropped a seed onto the ground and the governor screamed at me. As usual I couldn’t say anything back and had to just continue on. The Peter (the governor) was extremely angry the last couple of days and one day a slave said something back. He was beaten worse than Dante Denzel and was sold to some other guy.
Finally the war was over and we had beaten Spain. Peter had finally calmed down and was almost back to normal. Instead of being angry he became sad. I felt bad for him but there was nothing I could do there was no way that Thomas could come back to life. The reason we won that war without our best solider was because of the awesome swords we had. We had only a few gun, not too many. I later had got a wife and had a kid.
The Life of Gary Wilkins
An autobiography by Gary Wilkins
What is the theme of conflict? Did you know what I think of when I am asked that question? I think of February 12, 1601. The day that my father`s was diagnosed with smallpox. The doctor had given my father a prognosis of three months to live, but he was perfectly fine after six, and half months. Actually the day that I will always remember is August 27, 1601. It was the day we had gone back to the same doctor, and he had told us that he had misdiagnosed my father Louie Wilkins. The next thing I remembered was me, and my brothers Joseph, and Gabriel almost beating up the doctor, luckily my sister Sophia blocked him. My mother was in the corner screaming at the top of her lungs at the doctor, and my father holding her back. After everyone had calmed down the doctor had came to my family in the waiting room, and apologized to us. My mom had screamed out that we were going to sue the doctor for misdiagnosing my father. He said that if we did not sue him that he would help my family with medical problems for the rest of our lives. My father thought it was a pretty decent deal. So of course we accepted the deal. After three months my brother Gabriel Wilkins had caught the cold, and with the free medical solution we had gone to the doctor`s office, and when we had asked the secretary about the one doctor she had stated that the doctor had not worked there anymore. My mother was so frustrated and angry that she almost broken the office window. Later in 1613 Louie Wilkins had died at the age of Sixty Three. In 1628 Sophia, and I had gotten married. Sadly she had died in 1639 leaving Sally, Toby, Edward, and I alone, and heartbroken. In 1645 I remarried to the women Marilyn Adams. She was the love of my life after Sophia obviously. Even after all of this had happened to me I just managed squeeze a little bit of courage to be a blacksmith. The only reason why I am a blacksmith is because I was in trouble with the king he made me do all of this because I was out after curfew doing some extra jobs to help my family out. The job of the blacksmith doesn't even pay me a cent that is the only reason why I don't like wasting my time doing it but if they did pay me that would be a totally different story. Even after all of this happened to me there were still many conflicts ahead of me. For example, the biggest one that I had to face was me getting sick and old , and finally dying. After my life story I realized that the theme of conflict is that I had to work as a blacksmith and not getting paid for it and for that I couldn't support my family.

The Militia Graduation
After four EXTREMELY long years finally we did it, Gary Wilkins, D’Andre French and I, Thomas Jones have graduated from The Militia Institute of New York. We all have been worked to our limit just too finally see the day where the governor of New York, Peter Penn would officially call us soldiers. As all the soldiers stood in the fields we waited for the governor to arrive. Something had to be wrong because the Governor was never late. Captains came to reassure us he was fine until we heard the shriek that had erupt from Governor with his horse almost being submerged from a chase by a Black bear and its cub. The captains told us to retreat to base and that they would handle it but Gary, D’Andre and I went in with our weapons and formed into our battle stances. The bear then automatically focused its provoked self to us. We didn’t want to kill the bear, that would’ve been very drastic. D’Andre tossed Gary and me some wooden bullets to only stun the creature. The creature pushed its cub out of the way and charged us Gary hesitated to shoot, until the bear was only a foot from Gary’s face. I shot the bear in both kneecaps it was still alive, just paralyzed from shock. The governor head toward us as the captains were trying to save the waterlogged horse. They governor asked “What do you three specialize in?” Gary responded “Blacksmithing”. I quickly said, “Combat” then D’Andre shakily answered “Utilities” At that moment the Governor dubbed D’Andre and Gary head of their specialty for the militia. All the soldiers started to return to the graduation site. As the Governor steadily limped his way the overly-decorated blue podium and proclaimed “You all are soldiers, none better than the others but as one. Due to the unexpected events yes I am injured, but for my life to still be here you must thank new head of blacksmiths, Gary Wilkins, new and first black head of utilities D’Andre French. Last, but certainly not least Thomas Jones! My new personal body guard who will follow me everywhere I go to insure my personal safety.” The Governor continued on how all the soldiers would be benefits to the colonies and Great Britain. We all felt full of self-pride then finally the part we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived. Everyone gathered to the podium then the Governor handed each and every soldier a medal of honor. The chefs came out to the field from their little cabins to bring the celebratory banquet. Everyone except The governor, Gary, D’Andre and , got a roast chicken and a steak with pitchers of lemonade going all around the tables. The head chef himself came to us and delivered four still steaming, Bear steaks. The Governor told me “Remember today as if it was the day of your birth, you have done something no man wouldn’t be proud of as of this day you aren’t a man or a boy. You are a soldier.” I teared up to his thought and words then we clinked drinks and continued are celebratory banquet.
